Artizan Street Library

Renovation of an inner city library incorporating bespoke makerspace furniture, drawing inspiration from the history of craftmanship inSpitalfields, whilst supporting upskilling and creativity for the local residents.
Challenge
To refurbish the interior of an existing undercroft library with low ceilings and very limited daylight, accommodating a maker space with machinery whilst creating an inclusive space accessible for all.
Solution
We helped the client win Arts Council funding to renovate the main library space, proposing opening up the space by removing internal partitions and using strong colours and visuals to separate the different areas. In close collaboration with the client and library designer, we adapted the design to create an inclusive space for all, limiting colours to the walls and introducing neutral flooring to minimize visual noise and create a greater sense of calm. A new maker space was created at the rear, allowing locals to make noise and create pieces of work undisturbed, with a new lounge at the front to display their work.
