On a very tight site in Tooting, this former Victorian school building was totally refurbished and, with the addition of a modern extension to the rear, we were able to achieve 9 new residential apartments for private rental. The project started on site in May 2017 and was successfully completed within 12 months.
Full details
The old school building provides space for 5 duplex apartments, whilst a new extension building to the rear provides an additional 4 apartments. A major challenge was the raising of the existing roof structure to allow the addition of another floor, achieving the required 9 apartments. A single-storey extension to the front was demolished creating a new entrance courtyard enclosed by a striking new timber slatted façade. The timber slats are repeated between the buildings, marrying the old and the new. The external landscaping was carefully considered to enhance the setting of the building.
